The first few weeks and months of motherhood are often portrayed as a serene, joyful experience. And while there are moments of pure bliss, the reality for many moms can be messy, overwhelming, and filled with unexpected emotions. If you're wondering what's "wrong" with you, or why this transition feels so different from what you imagined, please know: you are not alone, and there is nothing wrong with you.

The pressure to be a "perfect" mom from day one is immense, both from society and from our own innate desire to be good mothers. This combination can create a recipe for stress, worry, and overwhelm—stealing the joy you deserve to feel.

It's common to feel like a beginner, but no one gives us permission to be one. You’re expected to instinctively know how to do it all, and when that doesn’t happen, it can lead to a sense of anxiety.

What is Postpartum Anxiety?

Postpartum anxiety is more common than you might think. Studies show that up to 15% of new moms experience it, and it can occur on its own or alongside postpartum depression.

While it's normal to feel a little anxious sometimes, postpartum anxiety is different. Here are some of the signs and symptoms to look for:

  • Excessive worry or fear about your baby's health or safety.

  • Intrusive, racing thoughts that you can't control.

  • Difficulty sleeping, even when the baby is sleeping.

  • Physical symptoms like a racing heart, shortness of breath, or feeling dizzy.

  • A constant feeling of dread or being on edge.

These feelings can feel all-consuming and rob you of the present moment. But there is a way through it.
